Tykeanaut | Anyone else remember Space Photos of Sunset Boulevard, Houston? I used to buy off them quite often in the seventies. Long gone now I suppose? |
Space Emblem Art | Wow, you took me back to high school days when I was buying photos and slides from them (early '70s). I still have them after all these years. Ah, the pre-internet days. |
Orthon | I have many of their slide sets. How about the company called Movie Newsreels? I have super 8mm Apollo flight films from them. They are gone now too. I suppose they have no value today. |

I too bought all of their sets back in 1970's. Quality began to get rather poor sometime around STS-5 or STS-6. I used to question them about it and they would always tell me it was JSC's fault. I think they were just doing a lousy job of duplicating. They are long gone. A member of the owner's family called me one time and offered up the remaining inventory. I think this was sometime in the early 1990's. |
Dan Lorraine | I was a big fan of "Movie Newsreals"... I can remember waiting after each Apollo mission for the films to be released. I bought them all as a kid and recently (within the past five years) sold them on this board for not much money. I just wanted to get them to someone that had an interest and could do something with them or appreciate and enjoy them. |
space1 | I too bought many slide sets from Space Photos. I frequently used them for slide presentations to classes. I still have them all. |
Cliff Lentz | My memories of Space Photos was ordering mission 8.5 x 11 lithos of the moon landings. I believe they were about $5.00 for 12 lithos in each set. Over the years I managed to get a lot of them signed. I ordered them all the way up to the Early Shuttle flights. I remember the brochures they would send that showed the slides available. Before the internet, it was probably the only way to see a lot of the photos not released by the media. It was just a great service. |
randyc | I still have the slides and lithos that I bought from Space Photos in 1968 and 1969 and the Super 8mm films from Movie Newsreels that I bought from 1968-1972. I even have all the Gemini and Apollo slide brochures from Space Photos. The brochures were a great way to see photos that the public usually didn't see. And the films from Movie Newsreels contained more footage than similar films from the 'commercial' companies like Castle. |

I don't know if they are still in business or not but I have two 11x14" Apollo 11 crew pictures with their "Published and Distributed by SPACE PHOTOS/2608 Sunset Blvd, Houston, Texas" in lower right corner. |
SpaceCadet1983 | I collected 35mm slides and an Ed White spacewalk lithograph from Space Photos as a young teen. The place was a virtual goldmine back in the 1960s-70s. They always seemed to have the choicest slides. The difficulty for me was trying to narrow down the sets I wanted! (I wanted them all!) I've always wondered what happened to them. |
J.L | They have been out of business for many years. Someone in the family contacted me a few years back offering to sell the remaining inventory. Not sure what ever happened to it. I too bought their slides back in the day. As a veteran NASA image archivist I eventually realized that the quality of their product was spotty at best. The Space Shuttle era slides are especially poor quality. The company did fill a need for quite awhile though. Funny, I guess I am doing something similar with my Retro Space Image discs. Big difference is much better quality and considerably more images being offered. |
OLDIE | The brother of one of my friends (who worked in the space industry) brought me back a few Gemini slides from Space Photos in the early 1970s. I thank them for getting me started on the whole space adventure. |
mach3valkyrie | I bought a bunch of stuff from that company in the 70s and early 80s. Slides, 8mm movies, Beta tapes, photos, almost everything in their catalog at one time or another. (I had their address memorized.) I still have a lot of the items with the exception of the old 8mm movies. Apollo, Skylab, Shuttle. They went for big prices on eBay, which surprised me. The Beta and VHS tapes were from Finley-Holiday Films and the 8mm movies were from Movie Newsreels. I think by the mid-90s, Space Photos was pretty much done. |
